With global warming, air conditioning is becoming a standard home feature
Just a few years ago, air conditioning in Europe was often seen as a luxury item, reserved for Mediterranean regions, hotels or offices.
The situation is changing rapidly.
Intense heatwaves are becoming more frequent, and European homes are not always designed to cope. Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Austria now experience periods when indoor temperatures can become unbearable, especially in top-floor flats, houses with large windows, and well-insulated buildings that lack protection against summer overheating.
As a result, the residential air conditioning market is growing rapidly in Europe.
And with this growth come considerable price differences. For what looks like an identical installation to the consumer, two companies might provide quotes where one is double the other.
This raises a legitimate question: how much should your air conditioning really cost in 2026? And more importantly, who is going to install it?
Air conditioning: don't confuse the unit with the installation
A common mistake is to only compare the brand and power of the unit.
Two quotes might both specify: 3.5 kW air conditioner, inverter technology, air-to-air heat pump, indoor unit + outdoor unit, remote control and Wi-Fi. And yet, the quality of the two installations can be very different.
An air conditioning installation typically includes the outdoor unit, one or more indoor units, refrigerant lines, the electrical supply, condensate drainage, supports and fixings, drilling, trunking, vacuum purging, refrigerant connections, testing, commissioning, and sometimes a refrigerant recharge or top-up.
The quality of the installation is at least as important as the brand of the machine.
What is the price of air conditioning in 2026?
The amounts below are ballpark figures. They can vary significantly depending on the power, brand, building configuration, length of the pipework, accessibility, electrical work and the number of indoor units.
Mono-split: one outdoor unit supplies one indoor unit. For a standard residential installation, you should generally budget around €1,500 to €3,500, including installation. Premium systems, complex installations or high-power units can exceed this range.
Bi-split: one outdoor unit for two indoor units, around €2,500 to €5,000.
Multi-split - 3 to 4 units: to cool several bedrooms and/or the living room, around €4,000 to €8,000, or even more.
Ducted system: the air conditioning is concealed in false ceilings, with air distributed through grilles. Depending on the building, this costs around €6,000 to €15,000, and sometimes significantly more. A system for a whole house can easily exceed €15,000 to €20,000 if it is sophisticated.
Belgium: a rapidly growing market
In Belgium, residential air conditioning is seeing significant growth. For a properly installed mono-split system, a budget of around €1,800 to €3,500 can be realistic, depending on the brand and the complexity of the job. For several rooms, a multi-split system can quickly reach €4,000 to €8,000.
However, be wary of extremely low offers. A price of €700 or €900 "all-inclusive" for a unit and its installation should prompt you to check the exact brand, model number, power, installer's qualifications, included pipework lengths, electrical work, warranty, commissioning, and the regulatory handling of refrigerants.
France: beware of price variations
In France, the market for air-to-air heat pumps is already well-developed. For a residential mono-split system, budgets of around €1,500 to €3,500 are common. For a multi-split system: €3,000 to €8,000 or more.
In large cities and in the south of France, prices can be higher during periods of high demand. A simple tip: don't wait for the first week of a heatwave to ask for air conditioning. Your negotiating power is at its weakest precisely when order books are full.
Spain: cheaper units, but not always comparable installations
Spain has a very mature market. Strong competition means you can sometimes find mono-split installations for around €1,000 to €2,500. But you must distinguish between a simple installation in a modern flat and one that requires several metres of pipework, electrical work or difficult routing.
In Spain, it is also common to find special offers that include the unit and a "standard installation". However, "standard installation" does not mean unlimited work. Always check what is included.
Germany: technical requirements and more expensive labour
Germany is also increasingly equipping itself with air conditioning. The cost of labour and technical requirements can lead to higher prices than those found in Spain.
A properly installed mono-split system can easily cost around €2,000 to €4,000. Multi-split or premium systems can cost several thousand euros more.
The Netherlands and Luxembourg
In the Netherlands, the residential air conditioning market has grown significantly. Prices are often comparable to those in Belgium: around €1,700 to €3,500 for a mono-split system, depending on the configuration.
In Luxembourg, more expensive labour can significantly increase the bill. A high-end installation with several units can quickly exceed €6,000 to €10,000.
Italy, Portugal and Greece: long-standing experience with air conditioning
These countries have been using residential air conditioning for much longer than Northern Europe. Competition is therefore strong. You can sometimes find less expensive installations there, especially for simple systems.
But the purchase price of an air conditioner in one country cannot be directly transferred to another. Taxation, wages, standards, warranties, travel costs and regulatory obligations are all different.
Which brands to choose?
Not all air conditioners are created equal. Manufacturers often considered to be market leaders include Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Panasonic, Toshiba and Fujitsu.
You can also find many units with excellent value for money from other international manufacturers. But never settle for just the brand name. Ask for the exact model number. The same brand may sell several ranges with very different performance, noise levels and prices.
Look at the SEER and SCOP ratings
The SEER indicates the seasonal energy efficiency in cooling mode. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit is at cooling.
The SCOP measures the seasonal efficiency when the unit operates as a heat pump to heat the home. This is because a modern reversible air conditioner can also be a particularly attractive way to heat your home in the mid-season.
A unit that is cheaper to buy can therefore become more expensive over several years if it consumes more electricity.
Noise: the factor people forget before signing
An air conditioner can be efficient yet become extremely unpleasant. Check the noise level of the indoor unit, especially for a bedroom, but also that of the outdoor unit.
Poor placement can cause vibrations, resonance, night-time noise, conflicts with neighbours, complaints or even an obligation to move the installation. The location of the outdoor unit must be carefully considered before you sign the quote.
Beware of "air conditioning specialists"
This is probably the most important point.
With the increase in demand, many companies now present themselves as air conditioning specialists. Some have genuinely specialised in this field for many years. Others were installing solar panels, boilers, or kitchens yesterday, or doing general building work, and have discovered a new speciality with the arrival of hot weather.
This is not necessarily a problem. But an air conditioner is not a simple home appliance that you just fix to the wall. It requires knowledge of refrigeration, electrics, condensate hydraulics, sizing, controls, handling of refrigerants, diagnostics and maintenance.
So, before you sign, check the company's actual experience. Ask: "How many years have you been installing air conditioners?" This very simple question can be particularly revealing.
Refrigerants: this is not a DIY job
The refrigerant circuit contains a fluid whose handling is regulated. European regulations are also changing significantly with the gradual phase-down of certain fluorinated gases with high global warming potential.
The installer must therefore be aware of the obligations applicable to the fluid used and hold the necessary qualifications and certifications where required.
Be particularly wary of the "I know a guy who can fit it for you this weekend" approach. An installation that is a few hundred euros cheaper can end up costing much more if a leak appears or the manufacturer rejects a warranty claim due to improper installation.
Vacuum purging: three words to remember
Ask your installer this question: "Do you perform a vacuum purge before commissioning?"
Vacuum purging is used to remove air and moisture from the circuit before the system is started up. It is a fundamental technical step.
If the person you are speaking to does not understand the question or tells you it is not necessary, get a second professional opinion.
An air conditioner must be correctly sized
More powerful does not necessarily mean better. The required power depends on factors such as the floor area, volume, orientation, glazed surfaces, insulation, number of occupants, heat-producing equipment, region, sun exposure and the use of the room.
A 15 m² bedroom obviously does not have the same needs as a 60 m² south-facing living room with large bay windows. A reputable installer must therefore size the installation before giving you a quote.
Beware of oversized air conditioners
Installing a machine that is far too powerful "just to be on the safe side" is not necessarily a good idea. Incorrect sizing can lead to short cycling, discomfort, unnecessary consumption, poor humidity control, premature wear and extra noise.
The right unit is the one that matches the building.
Condensate drainage: small detail, big problem
An air conditioner produces water. This water must be drained away properly. Poorly designed drainage can cause leaks, damp, stains on walls, bad smells, ceiling damage or problems with the condensate pump.
The quote should therefore specify how the condensate will be drained.
An €800 air conditioner vs. a €2,500 one: why such a difference?
Because you are not just buying a box with a fan. You are buying a unit + sizing + a refrigeration installation + an electrical installation + commissioning + a warranty + after-sales service.
A very cheap offer might be excellent, but there must be an explanation for it. Conversely, a very expensive quote is not automatically a guarantee of quality. The price must be technically justifiable.
Maintenance: how much does it cost?
The filters must be cleaned regularly. Periodic professional maintenance also allows for checking the general condition of the system, the condensate drain, the heat exchangers and any potential issues.
Depending on the country, the type of unit and the work required, you can generally expect to pay between one hundred and a few hundred euros. Regulatory requirements may also vary depending on the system and the quantity or type of refrigerant.
Will global warming make air conditioning universal in Europe?
It will likely become more common, but air conditioning should not be the only answer to heat. Before increasing a building's cooling capacity, you should also think about insulation, ventilation, sun protection, external blinds, glazing, roof protection and night-time ventilation.
A well-designed house may require much less air conditioning. The best kWh is still the one you don't have to use.
10 points to check before signing your quote
Before paying a deposit, check at least the following:
- The exact model numbers of the units.
- The power rating proposed for each room.
- The SEER and SCOP ratings.
- The indoor and outdoor noise levels.
- The length of pipework included in the price.
- The handling and drainage of condensate.
- Whether electrical work is included or not.
- The installer's necessary qualifications.
- The warranty duration and conditions.
- The company's genuine existence and its ability to provide after-sales service.
And above all, compare like with like. Two quotes that simply state "Supply and fit air conditioning - €4,800" allow for virtually no serious comparison. A good quote must be detailed enough for you to understand what you are buying.
ECV: analyse the quote before you sign
With rising temperatures in Europe, thousands of homeowners will likely get air conditioning in the coming years. This growth will attract competent companies, but also opportunistic installers.
Before you sign, it is therefore wise to check the company, the prices, the proposed equipment, the consistency of the power ratings, the services included and the main technical specifications of the quote.
A correctly sized and properly installed air conditioning system can work for many years. A poor installation can start causing problems from the very first summer.
